Solutions to Fix Crowded Teeth San Francisco

Teeth crowding occurs when there isn’t enough room in the mouth for all of the teeth to fit comfortably. Instead, they start to press against each other, overlapping and twisting. Sometimes certain teeth can shift in front of or behind one another.

Not only are crowded teeth problematic to the aesthetics of a smile, they can also lead to oral health issues. It is difficult to keep crowded teeth clean and remove bacteria and food particles that can get stuck in the tiny spaces between the teeth. Bacteria can build up, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

If you have crowded teeth, Dr. Samir Ayoub offers several treatment solutions to improve their spacing and alignment. The solution recommended to you will depend on the severity of your crowding, your oral hygiene and other personal factors.

Invisalign

Invisalign is an extremely popular way to correct teeth crowding. With the Invisalign system, you wear a series of removable plastic aligners that put gentle pressure on your teeth to move them into the desired position. The aligners are clear and very discreet, so no one can detect them while you are wearing them. You can easily remove the aligners to eat, drink, brush and floss.

Traditional Braces

If your teeth crowding is severe, you may see the most benefit from traditional braces. The system of brackets, bands and wires gradually shifts your teeth into the proper alignment and position. Unlike Invisalign, braces are not removable until you have finished treatment. Sometimes one or more teeth need to be extracted before placing braces in order to achieve the most optimal outcome.

Retainers

Retainers are custom-made appliances that hold the teeth in place after finishing treatment with Invisalign or traditional braces. Retainers are made from wires or clear plastic materials. They are generally worn at night while you sleep, and removed during the day.
