Tooth-Colored / White Fillings in San Francisco

Fillings are a restorative solution often employed by San Francisco dentist Dr. Samir Ayoub. Most commonly placed as part of cavity treatment, fillings can also be used to repair cracked teeth, broken teeth or teeth that are worn down from chronic grinding or clenching. And, in some cases tooth-colored fillings can be used to modify the shape, size or color of the teeth for cosmetic purposes.

San Francisco Tooth Colored Fillings

Older traditional fillings were made from metal and gold materials. However, the modern focus on dental aesthetics has led to the evolution of tooth-colored or “white” fillings, which look completely natural and blend in flawlessly with the surrounding teeth. Tooth-colored fillings are cosmetically advantageous because they mimic the natural appearance of tooth structure; they can be placed on the front teeth without looking artificial or conspicuous. In a functional sense, tooth-colored fillings can restore nearly all of the original strength of the tooth.

Do I Need a Filling?

You may need a filling if you have:

  • Tooth decay
  • Minimal tooth fracture
  • Otherwise damaged tooth surfaces<
  • Differences in the size or shape of your teeth

If you believe you may benefit from fillings, Dr. Ayoub encourages you to schedule a consultation at his practice so he can examine your teeth and recommend the best course of treatment. If Dr. Ayoub determines that you do need a filling, he will review your options, including tooth-colored fillings, amalgam and gold. He will explain the aesthetics and longevity of each option.

Should Dr. Ayoub determine that you need an alternative restoration, such as a crown or an inlay, he can review those options with you at the time of consultation.

Treatment Details

Tooth-colored fillings must be chemically bonded to the teeth. First, Dr. Ayoub must identify and remove any dental decay. He may perform a visual exam or take X-rays to determine the extent of damage. He will remove the decay or damage using a handpiece or laser, and clean the area to ensure bacteria and debris are completely gone. Dr. Ayoub may apply a primer to the tooth being restored. After the tooth is primed, he will place the composite filling material in the area where the decayed material was removed, and use a special bonding light to harden it. Finally, Dr. Ayoub will check your bite to make sure your teeth fit together properly. If needed, he can make last-minute adjustments to the filling. Dr. Ayoub will also smooth and polish the filling so it takes on a translucent quality similar to natural teeth.

Dr. Ayoub will provide instructions for caring for the filling and preventing future decay from forming around the filling or in other teeth. With the proper care and attention, dental fillings can last a long time. If a filling becomes damaged, Dr. Ayoub can repair it or recommend an alternative restoration.
